“The Art of Memory”

Maria is an award-winning photographer and visual storyteller whose work moves between documentary, art, and fashion with a deeply cinematic eye. Her photography has been featured in The Guardian, Le Monde, Reuters, BBC, and by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, among others. She is a World Press Photo award recipient and was named by Vogue as one of the 150 leading female photographers globally.

Her love for photography began at six years old, when she received her first Polaroid camera, a small object that quietly shaped an entire way of seeing the world. Before fully dedicating herself to photography, Maria studied and worked as an architect, a background that still echoes through her imagery today: thoughtful compositions, poetic light, emotional storytelling, and an instinct for beauty in both people and spaces.

Inspired by cinema, music, literature, design, fashion, and travel, her work blends documentary honesty with an editorial and analog-inspired aesthetic. Warm, timeless, intimate, and alive with emotion, her photographs seek to preserve not only how moments looked, but how they felt.

Through Atelier Memória, Maria captures weddings and love stories with a natural, unobtrusive approach, never forcing moments and never interrupting the rhythm of the day. More than a photographer, she becomes a calm and familiar presence among guests, documenting fleeting gestures, quiet emotions, movement, laughter, light, and all the in-between moments that make a story real.

Based in Portugal and available worldwide, Maria photographs for the rebels of romance, those who love deeply, celebrate freely, and find beauty in the imperfect. Because memories are not just images, they are places we return to. That is why this project is called Atelier Memória, the Portuguese word for memory.

So grateful we found Maria!
We are so incredibly grateful to have found Maria as our wedding photographer. From the very beginning, she was thoughtful, responsive, and genuinely helpful throughout the planning process, even helping us plan an unforgettable weekend in Lisbon when we came out for our tasting.  On the day of our wedding, she had the perfect balance of being relaxed and unobtrusive, yet confident and clear when it came time to gather people for important shots. She blended seamlessly with our guests — and felt like just another friend at our wedding by the time our day finally came around. The photos are beautiful, natural, and perfectly capture the emotions and feel of the night. We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer and can’t wait to relive this night over and over again with her incredible shots. Thank you, Maria!

Truth and intensity!
Maria was the calm and reassuring gaze in many important moments. She was part of the joy of our day so naturally that we felt her as one of us, like a long-time friend. Maria had the gift of always being present in a discreet and sometimes almost imperceptible way. After seeing the photographs, we realized: this was the profoundly intelligent way to capture the naturalness of the most beautiful and genuine moments of our day. The result was sent to us in record time, and we still can't find the words to describe the masterpiece that the collection of photographs we received represents. Seeing the photos, we can hear the laughter of our friends, hear the music, feel the pulse of such a good, intense, and lively day. The photographs are nothing less than that: truth and intensity. Maria works with great passion, and it shows: from the first moment we met until the end when we see her work, there is passion in every detail. We've said it many times and repeat it: we are so glad we chose Maria!

We couldn't be happier with the results
Having Maria at our wedding was a gift. From the very beginning, she embraced the adventure of flying to Venice with all the accessories, suitcases, and the logistics of planes, trains, and even a bus. Not everyone can do that... The briefing we gave her was simply that we didn't want forced photos, just a record of what was happening throughout the day. And the truth is, we couldn't be happier with the result: fun moments, very natural and spontaneous photos that capture what we all experienced that day. Moreover, Maria always conveyed a sense of tranquility, even in moments that were more anxIOUS for me, and that made all the difference.  Where's the button to go back in time and do it all over again?
