Blooming Haus is a modern floristry studio based in London, United Kingdom. What started as a small pop-up in Chelsea, is now one of the most modern and cutting-edge floristry studios in Europe. The studio was founded in 2014, as the brainchild of Michal Kowalski and Michael Dariane, and has grown ever since.
The team at Blooming Haus pushes the envelope in ways that most studios never will. The arrangements are always unique, creative, and sustainable, no matter what occasion they were crafted for.
Blooming Haus exclusively uses florals from sustainable sources and places them in arrangements only when they are at their peak of freshness. The team members at Blooming Haus have a very hands-on approach to floristry design and it’s that authenticity that lends such meaning to their creations.
We recently had a chat with Michal Kowalski, one half of the Blooming Haus brand, to pick his brain about all things floral, his creative process, and what’s next for the world of wedding floristry.
The History of Blooming Haus
As a young boy, I always had an obsession with nature and stand-out floristry. It drove me to study in Switzerland and Austria on an all-encompassing course that uniquely combined art and floristry. When I arrived in London with a dream to build a fashion-forward luxury floral brand, my business-savvy co-founder Michael Dariane helped get things off the ground with our humble pop-up store in Chelsea, South West London.
Our unwavering commitment to ensuring our customers are satisfied with their arrangements has grown us a large and loyal clientele. Our humble beginnings transformed into grand installations, editorial projects, galas, personal celebrations, and sophisticated weddings. In 2014, we launched Blooming Haus! We now have a large visionary studio in Battersea, our playground for consistently breaking the mold and pioneering a new type of luxury.
What Blooming Haus Does Differently
With so many wonderful florists doing incredible things, it was important for us to create our own style which was unique to us as creators, yet identifiable to others. It often escapes the confines of language, and for us, that’s the whole point! Yet, when you work with us, you can always expect the unexpected in the best possible way. Even if our clients ask for something incredibly traditional, they’ll get it, of course, but with the kind of verve that only Blooming Haus can offer. We revel in piquing the senses.
Using Local & Sustainable Blooms
When we talk about better processes, we’re often alluding to sustainability. Choosing local blooms allows us to minimize our carbon footprint and champion our local growers. When we’re able to do this, we often cut the 4000-mile delivery from places like the Netherlands, where the vast majority of the UK’s cut flowers are imported from.
For us, sustainability isn’t just a business incentive; it’s something incredibly close to our hearts. As florists, not only is it our duty to give back from what we take and help forge a path that makes way for better methods of doing things, but like many others, we’re acutely aware of the current global situation and are mindful of both people and the planet.
That’s why in addition to local blooms, we educate our clients on the impact of seasonal flower choices and run tree planting campaigns for all our corporate and wedding clients, where we plant a tree for every occasion we undertake together. In our mission to pioneer a new type of luxury that can exist at the forefront of positive change, we’re continually spearheading improvements we can make that help to build a brighter future for everyone. No detail is overlooked, from big changes like powering our studio with green energy to seemingly smaller details such as using cleaning products that are free from harmful chemicals. You can find out more about our continual carbon offsetting efforts on our website.
Floristry in Weddings
For us, wedding floristry is far more than just maximizing the beauty and character of your chosen venue, creating a welcome ambiance, and expressing your style or values; it’s integral to the magnetism of your special day.
Design-driven florals ensure that you and your guests can still smell and feel the redolence of the atmosphere long after the occasion is over.
Beyond the design and the florals, the team putting it all together is equally as important! Though the chances of something going wrong on your special day can, and should be, minimized, it’s impossible to rule it out altogether. In this case, the make or break of the perfect wedding comes down to your team putting it all together and how equipped or creative they can be in finding solutions that work. It’s always nice to know that your team is ready for anything.
Letting the Blooms Lead the Way
There’s never a set formula at Blooming Haus. Every bride, groom, venue, and occasion is different, so our approach is tailored to each wedding couple. The theme of florals across different settings often balances our artistic vision and the wedding couple's desires. Everything from lighting to table decor, textures, and other elements is poised to have the desired impact.
Memorable Blooming Haus Clients
How do we choose! We’ve had many standout events with brands such as Burberry, Bulgari, Diptyque, Rolls Royce, Chanel, Tiffany, Apple, Vogue, Tatler, Bulgari Hotels, Four Seasons Hotels, and Pan Pacific Hotels.
Though, we did recently do a private birthday event for an international client of ours who organized, through her planner, a Casino Royal-themed birthday event in a real casino! It was the epitome of class and style, catering to even the smallest details.
Client Vision, Managing Expectations, and the Creative Process
Recently we are noticing that wedding couples are opting for a more holistic approach to their wedding planning. In this case, event planners and other wedding vendors come from a network of professionals who have either worked together or know each other's way of working, processes, and style. We love it when this happens because it means we can recommend some genuinely talented and reliable wedding professionals.
Moodboards are a great entry point for us to get an initial feel for the day. Communication throughout the entire process is critical. We’ll always meet our wedding couples onsite at their chosen venue to plan the floral installations in situ. We also ask them to bring any fabrics they’ve chosen or are considering for their dress/suits - anything that will help us paint a picture for the big day ahead of time.
The ideal balance of client vision vs creative freedom is something that, at least for us, tends to happen very naturally. We listen to our clients; we spend time getting to know them to ensure we can do them and their commitment to each other proud on the big day. Whether the wedding couple has a vision for their wedding day or an open mind at the stage they contact us, we’ll always offer our finest suggestions. We can help them maximize their budget, make smart and sustainable choices, and ultimately ensure they will be elated with the results.
