Simona and Angelo met in a small office in provincial Italy, the kind of place that could have passed for the set of The Office. After six months at neighboring desks, they were in love, and they left together. They opened a tiny communications agency, and photography kept taking up more space inside it until, by 2015, there was no room left for anything else. They married two years later, and they have worked side by side every day since.
What they were really after when they left that office was a slower way of living, and they found it in a farmhouse in Abruzzo, where they are both from and where they grow a good part of what they eat. The garden sets the rhythm of their weeks at home, and for the rest of the year they are away, which is where their name comes from as well: “andare a zonzo” is Italian for wandering with nowhere in particular to be, and wandering is what brought them to destination weddings in the first place. Since they would rather not give up either half of that life, they take no more than fourteen weddings a year.
That pace is also what they bring to a wedding day. The first thing they ask for when they arrive is a coffee. They do want it, being Italian, but it is also the quickest way to let a room know that nobody is late and nothing is an emergency.
They are both there from beginning to end and they never split up. Simona stays close to the couple, near enough to notice what they need before they do, while Angelo is out among the guests, learning names and usually ending up on the dance floor. Most of the day is photographed on digital, with film for portraits and details, and they guide only where guidance helps. When someone is nervous, a word or a hand is worth more to them than the photograph they lose while they give it, and the pictures they like best tend to arrive a few minutes later anyway. They have never counted how many weddings they have photographed and would rather not know, because there have been a great many and they remember all of them, and all their couples.
