Bridal bouquets have been a wedding staple since the times of ancient Rome. What began with Roman brides has since morphed into a full-blow traditional wedding staple. Over the last ten years, we’ve seen more and more brides opt for a unique take on the traditional bouquet. Gone are the classic bouquets of roses, tulips, lilies and peonies, and in their stead we’re now seeing more greenery, aromatic plants, unique flowers and … herbs!
Whether you’re a foodie or not, adding herbs to your bouquet will make your day smell as good as it feels! Here are our favourite herbs to include in your bridal bouquet this year!
Lemon Verbena
Lemon Verbena is used by chefs across the world to add a citrus flavour to fish and poultry dishes. It is used in traditional South American medicine and can be processed into essential oils. Lemon Verbena occurs naturally in South America, North Africa, Southern Europe and specific regions of the Middle East. Lemon Verbena would make a wonderful, lively addition to your bridal bouquet!

Mint
For lovers of classical fragrances, mint represents the pinnacle of refinement. Pair your mint-accented bouquet with a classic Pimms & Lemonade, some wonderful sunshine and a fresh wedding menu for the most idyllic wedding in history! Mint has all sorts of health benefits including lowering oxidative stress, supporting liver health, reducing high blood pressure and helping fight the signs of aging.

Bee Balm
Bee Balm leaves have scalloped edges and the plant sprouts vibrant red and pink flowers. Bee Balm works well with lavender, mint, basil and together, they create a wonderfully perfumed bouquet. Add in some white roses, maybe a stem of waxflower or Queen Anne’s lace, and you’ll have a beautiful looking and smelling bouquet for your special day!
Thyme
Not just good with chicken, thyme is a great addition to any bridal bouquet. Best suited for more earthy, outdoor celebrations, thyme adds wholesomeness and authenticity to a bouquet. Imagine an outdoor wedding with guests sitting amongst the wildflowers of an open meadow, and your bouquet features the best that nature can offer.
Lamb’s Ear
Lamb’s Ear is a woolly herb from the mint family. It only grows in Armenia, Iran and Turkey. Lamb’s Ear adds a silver sheen to any bridal bouquet and works well in winter weddings as it highlights the traditional colour palette of a winter wedding. This herb loves sunshine and is well known for its leaves, but less so for its flowers.

Myrtle
There are many variations of myrtle, but True Myrtle is our favourite. Myrtle has all sorts of medicinal uses and a scent that resembles eucalyptus. This fragrance makes a perfect addition to a greenery-heavy bouquet arrangement. Add dimension to a green bouquet with basil and Bells of Ireland - both of which smell amazing! Did you know that Kate Middleton had Myrtle in her bridal bouquet? It's a favourite of the British royal family!
Sage
Sage is used in most modern cuisines and looks lovely in a wedding bouquet. Sage has broad, flat leaves and a herby fragrance that any chef would recognize instantly. Like all herbs, sage has medicinal properties including antibacterial, antispasmodic, antistress and antiseptic benefits. Sage is an elegant and timeless addition to any bridal bouquet, and will add a unique aspect to your wedding day!
