The Mood Board: Rooted Romance

| By Kayla McFadden
The color combination of the year that shows no signs of slowing down

Ask any florist, wedding planner, or stationery designer what color combination they've been asked for most this year, and you'll get the same answer: plum and olive. Couples who once reached for a classic dusty rose or sage green are now landing on this chic color combo, dubbed 'Rooted Romance' by Pinterest. Searches for “plum and olive wedding” on Pinterest skyrocketed by 1,380% for 2026 weddings, alongside “plum wedding theme” (up +630%), “fig wedding” (up +515%), and “merlot wedding” (up +370%). These wine-soaked tones feel sophisticated, warm, and grounded in nature, reading moody from one angle and elegant from another, which is precisely why it has captured the industry's imagination with such force.

Florists are building arrangements that are rich in texture with mossy foliage as the base and black calla lilies or burgundy anthiriums as the statement bloom. At the table, the palette translates into rather minimalist settings that let the florals do the talking while cakes are being finished with real blooms trailing out from their textured buttercream bases. And for stationery, invitations are arriving in deep violet ink on warm cream cardstock, accented with green wax seals or printed envelopes. One thing is certain: the most successful interpretations use olive as the foundation and let the plum arrive as punctuation. This is the color story of 2026, and it shows no sign of slowing down.
