Sav & Cam are a talented wedding photographer and videographer team capturing destination weddings. As a husband and wife duo, they travel the world shooting love stories on both digital and film as well as super 8 and 16mm video. Sav & Cam believe that documenting your story isn't just about capturing how it looked but how it felt too. With this approach, they create timeless records of life’s most cherished moments. We’ve chatted with Sav to learn more about her and Cam's art.
How did your love for wedding photography begin?
I shot my first wedding as a sophomore in college, and it really just took off from there. I had always loved photography since I was a kid, and as I grew older I was lugging one everywhere — taking portraits of my friends, making videos from vacations. But once I documented my first couple, I was hooked. There’s something so different about capturing the connection between two people vs. shooting just one person or shooting landscapes. Once I got a taste there was really no going back for me!
Who or what inspires your work?
I have a lot of photographers that I look up to that constantly inspire me for various reasons: Naomi Goggin, Joanna Brown, Yellow Bird Visuals, Daniel Kim, and AJ Tamari to name a few. As far as what inspires me, my surroundings can really influence me. Amazing light, long flowy grass, being able to dream up movements in a space. But my own personal love story and how we interact with one another, and travel and have new experiences together, inspires me in many ways as well.
In your opinion, what are the most important elements of a successful wedding photoshoot?
Hands down, being present with one another and just being in love. If you are 100% yourself, bouncing off your partner, and just let everything else fade away, the photos will reflect that beautifully, no matter what kind of environment we’re in. Also, giving yourselves time to do that plays a huge part. Create space in your wedding timeline to do just that — be present with one another, play, and soak it all in.
What tips do you have for couples to make their wedding photos stand out?
Similarly to that last answer, being yourself as much as possible and being completely present will always stand out. Most of my work I look back on and think that there was no way I could replicate it if I tried, because it was 100% my couple being genuine with one another. No trendy poses — just genuine love. In a more logistical sense, collaborating with your photographer and planner can be really beneficial. We know where / what things will photograph best, trends to avoid, unique elements, etc. Great fashion and aesthetically pleasing elements will never hurt!
Aside from photography, you also work as wedding videographers. How would you describe your video style?
Our video style is natural, honest, and artful. We document mostly on super 8 and 16mm film these days, which really helps execute the way we want our work to feel. Video on film (much like photographs as well) is imperfect. There’s scratches, dust, bumps and shakes. But we feel as if that’s how life, love, and weddings are — imperfect, but honest and beautiful at the same time.
How do you choose footage and music for your film?
We curate highlights from the day as well as all the little moments that make up your wedding. We absolutely love delivering videos and the couple getting back to us saying “We forgot that happened!” Or “It’s so special to have this on film.” The couple can’t be everywhere at once, so it’s really special being able to give them glimpses into their entire day. As far as music goes, we collaborate with the couple a bit to get a sense for their personal preferences, as well as if they have any songs that are meaningful to them and their relationship. We pair that with the vibe of the day and make our selections from there.
What's the most challenging thing about wedding filmmaking?
There’s a lot of logistics and small parts that go into filming a wedding, especially on film only. Making sure all the moving parts are working properly, everything is set up on time, having everything done ahead of time while filming…it can be challenging, but it’s so fun at the same time and we love every part of it!
Do you have any bucket list locations that you hope to shoot weddings at one day?
We are constantly adding new places to our list that we want to visit, it almost feels impossible to hit them all! We’d love to shoot in Italy, France, Ireland…really anywhere in Europe we would be stoked on haha! But we also love some spots here in the US that would be a dream: Inness NY, Sea Ranch Lodge, Amangiri…the list goes on! We’ll follow couples in love anywhere.
