We got Sammy to shoot our wedding back in July 2024. It was a no brainer for me from the beginning - I chanced upon her portfolio on Instagram a few years back and was instantly taken by how unique her style of wedding photography was, so spontaneous, candid, joyful, and above all, how much love she was able to capture in still images. At the time it seemed like a long shot to me - I knew she was mostly based in Hong Kong and occasionally Korea/Australia (from the geotags on her images) and our wedding was to be in Singapore. But after months of combing through local photographers and videographers I still found myself coming away dissatisfied; nothing quite came close to her artistic flair, the genuine emotion in her photographs, and how it all met at the interface of film/digital photography she was able to offer even whilst working solo (no mean feat).
So we decided to take the plunge and reach out to her, even whilst knowing it might be very hard to make things work. But to our happy surprise, she happened to be available, and even willing to fly down to Singapore just for our wedding! I was floored by her willingness to commit, but at the same time slightly apprehensive - since, being from abroad, no one I knew had worked with her personally.
My fears were happily unfounded. From the get-go Sammy was professional and approachable, highly responsive, taking the time to answer all my queries and concerns (regardless of how insignificant they were!) Furthermore she went above and beyond to get to know us as a couple, trying to understand our dynamic and our relationship, our story, so that she could more honestly capture it and bring it through in her photography. I particularly appreciated how she treated us more as friends rather than clients, allowing us to really open up to her and share our lives with her. She continued to be responsive throughout the months leading up to the wedding, assuaging all my anxiety and prior reservations.
My friends and family were especially impressed with how professional she was on the day itself - uncompromising in her standards, willing to do the uncomfortable just to get the right angles and shots. I was worried that I might feel awkward or uncomfortable posing for the camera, but she managed to make us feel comfortable with doing slightly more unfamiliar actions or poses so everything came really naturally!
And I haven’t even gotten to the photos yet! When we received them they were everything I had dreamed of and more. Her versatility and artistry as a photographer was clearly demonstrated across the wide range of emotions and moments she managed to capture - ranging from the quiet and intimate to the raucous and exuberant. As I went through the albums each image elicited the memories and emotions of our wedding day so poignantly, which, of course, is all I could’ve asked for in wedding photos! But beyond that - I was truly amazed by how she managed to portray each of my loved ones so earnestly and accurately, capturing moments that I myself had missed in the bustle of everything that was happening.
I often say that getting her to shoot our wedding was one of the best decisions we made throughout the process - and even now, more than half a year down the road, I still feel exactly the same way. Working with her was a breeze, having confidence of her professionalism and capabilities, and the results speak for themselves. I’m so glad that we decided to reach out to her despite the perceived barriers of being based in different countries (perhaps not perceived, haha, but we made it work!) - no regrets at all, and even now I have nothing but praises to sing of her and her work.
All this to say - if you’re thinking about hiring Sammy, take this as the message that you most definitely should!
