Held in a historic Danish castle, Mikkel & Frederik's celebration beautifully blended timeless elegance with deeply personal, heartfelt moments. The atmosphere was nothing short of magical – warm, authentic and heartfelt – while the surroundings fulfilled every dream of grandeur. The ceremony unfolded under a canopy of lush monochrome white flowers, a soft and romantic contrast to the bold installation of giant silver spheres glittering in the background. After the vows, a chic reception awaited in the castle hall – a candlelit dinner framed by classic architecture and a sea of elegant white flowers. Every detail spoke of purpose and love, from the heartfelt speeches to the laughter echoing through the historic walls.
Our Love Story
The Day We Met
We met on Instagram when I sent a message that went: “It doesn’t cost anything to ask, and the worst that could happen is you get a no – so, do you want to grab a beer?” A couple of months later, we met in the City of Smiles – Aarhus – for our first date.
The Proposal
Mikkel initially proposed to me at a charming little hotel that used to be an old olive farm in Mallorca. After setting the wedding date and nearly a year had passed, I decided to propose back – following the tradition that you should marry within a year of the proposal. I used my grandmother’s engagement ring and proposed on December 25th – which is not only Christmas night but also Mikkel’s birthday. Coincidentally, it was exactly 70 years to the day since my grandfather proposed to his grandmother with the same ring. I simply asked:
“Do you still want to get married?”
The Engagement Ring
We had originally hoped to have my grandmother’s ring melted down and redesigned, but that wasn’t possible. Instead, we had our rings custom-made by the Danish jewelry brand IX Studios.
Our Wedding
The Vision
We dreamed of a wedding where the surroundings felt grand and special, yet the atmosphere remained deeply authentic, personal, and full of heart.
Our Team of Vendors
Lykkesholm Castle also runs a Michelin-starred restaurant, so we knew we were in the best hands when it came to food and wine. The staff were not only incredibly professional but also among the kindest people we've ever worked with. One of our best friends – a well-known Danish YouTuber and public figure – was our toastmaster. She went above and beyond to make everything come together ahead of the big day. We’d planned everything in advance, so when our wedding planners arrived, they were handed a Mastercard and a list of vendor contacts to ensure everything ran smoothly.
The Location
Lykkesholm is a historic castle nestled between Ryslinge and Ørbæk in Southeast Funen. It was first mentioned in 1329 as “Magelund,” but has been known as Lykkesholm since 1380. The protected main building was built in 1600 by Domenicus Badiaz and later renovated in 1668, 1784, and 1786.
The Ceremony
After announcing our engagement, the Mayor of Greve Municipality personally offered to officiate the ceremony. She had married over 1,000 couples, yet she told us that ours was only one of two weddings where she actually felt nervous! Following Danish tradition, we didn’t see each other on the wedding day before the ceremony. We stayed in opposite wings of the castle and each got ready with our best men.
Just before the ceremony, we stood with our parents on either side of two large doors facing the courtyard. As the music began, the doors opened, and we saw each other in our wedding suits for the first time. During the ceremony, there wasn’t a dry eye among the guests. When it ended, we played “Just Say Yes” by Snow Patrol and returned to the courtyard to a wave of cheers and celebration.
The Reception
The reception was held on the sunny side of the castle, where we had an Aperol Spritz bar set up for guests to relax and mingle. Our wedding cake was crafted by Emilie Persson – a former contestant on the Danish Great Bake Off – and it was everything we had dreamed of. We took a group photo with all our guests, then went off for our couple portraits. Afterwards, we made our entrance into the Knights Hall at the heart of the castle for dinner.
As we walked up the grand staircase, we could hear our guests cheering and clapping. Entering the hall to that roar of love and applause was truly magical. Our speeches to each other were the first of the evening and set the tone for a night full of honesty, vulnerability, and connection. We opened up about the challenges and traumas we had overcome to get to this point – and it created space for open, heartfelt conversations at every table. The night ended on the dance floor at 5:30 AM, packed with our favorite people — thanks in part to the Vodka Red Bulls on the drinks list!
The Special Touches
We were lucky to have Cerise create their iconic oversized metal balloons, giving the historic venue a modern and playful touch. Together with the styling team from A Table Story, everything came together exactly as we had envisioned it.
Our Favorite Moment
The energy, joy, and love that our guests brought — the vibe was unforgettable.
Our Style
The Grooms’ Looks
We had our suits custom-designed by renowned Danish designer Søren Le Schmidt — one of the best decisions we made! We felt amazing in them. With black tank tops under our jackets, we could still feel like ourselves — relaxed and not too formal.
Our Advice
For the Planning Process
Choose a venue that really knows what they’re doing. That way, you can focus on the details instead of worrying about the big picture.
For On the Day
Take small breaks together during the day — talk to each other and take it all in. When the party starts — DANCE! Being on the dance floor makes you accessible to everyone, and you won’t lose magical moments deep in conversation with a tipsy friend.
For Post-Wedding
Plan a quick getaway right after the wedding. Bring your guestbook, buy a bottle of wine, and sit on a balcony reading each page aloud — the other one has to guess who wrote it. It’s the perfect way to hold on to the magic a little longer.
