A floating ceremony, 10,000 lilies, and a love story shaped by the sea

Shilu and Roger’s wedding was a study in modern romance, where the extraordinary beauty of the Maldives became part of the design itself. Their ceremony made the biggest statement: more than 10,000 white lilies transformed the resort’s iconic floating platform into a surreal field of blooms, while a mirrored aisle dissolved into the turquoise horizon. At the reception, curved tables traced wave-like forms through the sand, layered with cascading greenery, fruits, vegetables, and candlelight for an organic, almost underwater-inspired tablescape. Capturing every fleeting moment were THE WED members Studio Opia, who served as both photographers and videographers for the celebration, preserving its cinematic atmosphere, spontaneous energy, and deeply personal sense of place.

Our Love Story

The Day We Met

Our story began with two Pekingese. They brought us together and have remained a big part of our lives ever since, eventually earning a place in our wedding crest. Roger's patience was tested early on. For our first brunch, I arrived nearly three hours late. Most people would have left, but Roger stayed. A few weeks later, we headed to Las Vegas for our first official date, which ended with me drinking him under the table. In many ways, those first few weeks set the tone for everything that followed. There was laughter, spontaneity, a bit of chaos, and an easy sense that we were exactly where we were supposed to be.

The Proposal

I'm a very private person, so I always knew the perfect proposal would be something intimate. Roger proposed in Tulum, Mexico, after a weekend at the Afterlife music festival. At sunset, he led me to one of Azulik's iconic treetop nests, woven above the jungle canopy and seemingly suspended between earth and sky. I thought we were simply on a tropical getaway filled with music, sunshine, and adventure. As I stood taking in the sunset, I turned around and found him on one knee. Suddenly, everything fell silent. For a moment, it felt like the entire world disappeared, leaving only Roger and me.

The Engagement Ring

I've never been a traditional diamond girl. I always knew I wanted a colored stone. Roger took that brief very seriously, sourcing the center stone himself and designing the ring with an up-and-coming California jeweler. The ring features a yellow marquise-cut diamond set in white gold with pavé diamonds. To this day, I'm still impressed by how good his design instincts are. Considering his profession has absolutely nothing to do with jewelry or fashion, he somehow managed to create the perfect ring for me.

Our Wedding

The Vision

The one word that guided our wedding was magic. We wanted to create something truly unique—an experience unlike anything we or our guests had ever seen before—while still feeling timeless, elegant, and graceful. Rather than imposing a traditional wedding aesthetic onto the Maldives, we wanted the celebration to feel as though it belonged there. We imagined something suspended between sea and sky, with a design that responded to the landscape rather than competed with it. The ocean, horizon, movement of the wind, and natural light became part of the visual language of the wedding, while every detail was intended to feel effortless, organic, and slightly surreal.

Our story has always been shaped by crossing oceans. I grew up in China, Roger in the U.S., and we built our life together in San Francisco. In many ways, the wedding became a reflection of that journey. We brought together the people we love from around the world and invited them to travel thousands of miles to the Maldives, sharing not only a wedding but an adventure. Surrounded by endless shades of blue, it felt as though we had found a small piece of heaven on earth. It was the perfect place to celebrate how far we had come and to begin the next chapter of our story together.

Our Team of Vendors

Behind every detail was an extraordinary global team spanning the United States, Asia, Europe, and the Maldives. Many were not only creative partners but dear friends who embraced our vision as their own. Because the entire celebration came together in just three months, the process required an extraordinary level of trust. We had to make decisions quickly and instinctively, which, in hindsight, made the wedding feel even more personal—there was very little time to overthink anything.

Together, the team accomplished what often felt impossible, bringing together world-class talent, craftsmanship, and passion to create something truly exceptional. More than the beauty they created, we will always cherish the love, friendship, and generosity that made it all possible. This celebration was as much a testament to the people behind it as it was to our love story.

The Location

Roger had always dreamed of a tropical wedding by the sea. We chose the Maldives because neither of us had ever been there before. It felt symbolic of marriage itself: an exciting journey into the unknown that we would discover together. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island was the perfect setting, allowing us to host our ceremony on its iconic floating pool and gather our guests for an intimate private-island celebration surrounded by endless ocean. What made it truly special was sharing the adventure with our family and friends, who traveled across the world to experience this once-in-a-lifetime journey alongside us. Their willingness to embrace the unknown made the celebration even more meaningful.

The Ceremony

Our ceremony was designed around one very personal element: white lilies, Roger's favorite flower. To us, their quiet elegance felt symbolic of being each other's one and only. Rather than using them as traditional floral arrangements, we wanted the lilies to become the landscape itself. More than 10,000 white lily blooms were layered along the floating platform, forming an abundant field of flowers on either side of the aisle. The intention was to soften the architecture of the space and make the ceremony feel as though it were floating naturally between the ocean and the sky.

A mirrored aisle reflected the changing light, clouds, and turquoise water, visually dissolving the boundary between the platform and its surroundings. The design was dramatic in scale yet restrained in color—romantic, ethereal, and deeply connected to the setting. After a morning of relentless rain and wind, the weather transformed just an hour before the ceremony. The sun broke through, the clouds parted, and a rainbow appeared on the horizon. Standing there surrounded by lilies, ocean, and endless sky, it felt as though nature had completed the design for us.

The Cocktail Hour

Cocktail hour took place during golden hour, my favorite time of day in the Maldives. As the sun began to set, the beach was bathed in the softest light, and everything seemed to slow down for a moment. Instead of traditional canapés, we hosted a dim sum cocktail hour featuring some of our favorite varieties. We welcomed guests with a glass of champagne accompanied by a caviar service. Dim sum has always been a special tradition for us. To accompany the dim sum, my signature cocktail was a Watermelon Margarita, while Roger's was an Espresso Martini. Both were served free-flow throughout the evening, carrying the celebration seamlessly from sunset into the night.

The Reception

Our reception took place on a private stretch of beach, where two long, curved tables flowed across the sand. From above, the tables formed an almost wave-like composition, with a continuous ribbon of greenery running between them. Cascading green amaranthus, grasses, textural foliage, and soft white blooms moved through the center like underwater vegetation, making the setting feel as though it had emerged naturally from beneath the water.

Grapes, green vegetables, flowers, and foliage were woven throughout the tablescape to symbolize harvest, abundance, and prosperity, blurring the line between a floral arrangement and a still life. Conrad’s chef team created a memorable dining experience, and for dessert, we cut a rectangular cake flavored with fresh coconut and local guava, a subtle nod to the Maldives. With flowing drapery moving in the ocean breeze, candlelight flickering across the tables, live music, and the sound of the waves nearby, the evening felt romantic, intimate, and unforgettable.

The Special Touches

Kicking off the celebration on day 1, we had an ocean excursion on a private yacht to take our guests snorkeling in the deep blue. Everyone was tired from traveling from far away, and it was the perfect way to take a break, relax, and enjoy the Maldives together before the wedding day. That evening, guests were welcomed to a private zone with fresh welcome coconuts and a serene acoustic serenade by a live guitarist. The evening unfolded with a vibrant beachside welcome party featuring a lavish seafood buffet and free-flowing drinks. Adding a personalized and interactive touch, attendees gathered for an Asian-themed tie-dye activity to craft their own custom fans. The remainder of the night set the tone for the festivities, with heartfelt speeches from cherished friends filling the evening with warmth and laughter.

Our Favorite Moment

Balancing a full wedding weekend with a few tranquil moments to slip away together was one of our favorite parts. In those intimate moments, time seemed to pause. The worries of everyday life faded into the magical Maldivian sunsets, and surrounded by the breathtaking natural beauty of Conrad Maldives, we truly felt as though we were in paradise. The morning after the wedding, we had a private breakfast for just the two of us in the underwater restaurant. It felt like a romantic scene from a movie — peaceful, elegant, and almost impossible to believe.

Our Style

The Bridal Looks

For my bridal looks, I wanted something timeless and elegant, but with a sense of playfulness. Rather than leaning into the typical beach-bride aesthetic, I chose pieces that felt true to my personal style. I also loved the idea of wearing couture against the backdrop of the Maldives and hoped the designers would be pleasantly surprised to see their creations by the ocean. I fell in love with Stéphane Rolland’s Rendez-Vous gown the moment I put it on. When Roger saw me, he said I looked like a “French goddess sculpture,” which remains one of my favorite compliments. I paired the gown with shimmering pink Valentino heels, adding a subtle pop of color to an otherwise all-white celebration.

For the reception, I changed into an Ines Di Santo gown featuring feathers, crystals, and a blush-toned train that moved beautifully in the ocean breeze and candlelight. My beauty look evolved throughout the day as well, beginning soft and natural before becoming more dramatic as the celebration continued. By the after-party, I had changed into Zimmermann, my go-to designer for vacation dressing, with glitter and silver foil woven through my hair as I fully embraced the festive spirit of the night.

The Groom Looks

I always envisioned a white suit tailored to perfection for my big day, so naturally I sought a tailor to help me bring that vision to life. A white double-breasted suit with matte black double flaps — bespoke, bold, and one of a kind — Ravi brought the vision to life. This was accompanied by an oversized matte black bow tie to finish the look. My father surprised me with a pair of jade cuff links on the wedding day, a family heirloom that I treasure dearly.

Our Advice

For The Planning Process

My biggest advice is to start early and stay true to yourselves. The most memorable weddings aren’t necessarily the trendiest. They’re the ones that genuinely reflect the couple. Be brave enough to imagine the impossible. Some of our favorite ideas seemed unrealistic at first, but with the right team and enough determination, they became reality. Dream big, trust your team, and don't forget to enjoy the journey along the way.

For On The Day

The big day is all about making time for the things that matter most to you, so create a wish list of the special moments and details you do not want to miss. Of course, there is a schedule to follow, but being present and enjoying the moment is equally important. Our photographers were incredibly efficient at gathering everyone for portraits, allowing us to return to the celebration as quickly as possible after the ceremony.

For Post-Wedding

This is the easy part — celebrate in the moment and cherish all the hard work everyone put in. Let the good times roll!
